Roll forward moves a request's period end to a later date and pulls the reports for the new periods. It's how you keep a trailing twelve months, a year-to-date P&L or a month-end balance sheet current without sending a new request.

Rolling a trailing-twelve-month request forward
Periods are set relative to the request's period end, so moving the end moves every report with it.

How periods move
Every report on a request is defined relative to the period end. Change the period end and each one re-resolves.
Say a request has period end September 30, 2026 and you roll forward to October 31, 2026:
| Report | Before | After (full periods) |
|---|---|---|
| Profit and Loss, trailing 12 months | October 2025 – September 2026 | November 2025 – October 2026 |
| Profit and Loss, fiscal year to date (calendar year) | January – September 2026 | January – October 2026 |
| Balance Sheet, as of period end | As of September 30, 2026 | As of October 31, 2026 |
| A/R Aging Summary, as of period end | As of September 30, 2026 | As of October 31, 2026 |
| Profit and Loss, last 3 complete fiscal years | 2023 – 2025 | 2023 – 2025 (unchanged until the next fiscal year closes) |
| General Ledger, fixed range January – June 2025 | January – June 2025 | Not pulled |
Reports with a fixed range or fixed date are skipped on roll forward, because there's nothing new to pull. A "since" period keeps its start date and its end moves.
Full or new months only
When you roll forward you choose what to pull.
- Full periods re-pulls each report for its whole new period. A trailing 12-month P&L comes back as the full twelve months ending October 31. Use this when earlier months may have changed, which is common: late entries, reclasses, a year-end adjustment.
- New months only pulls just the months after the previous period end, for every date-range report, fiscal-year periods included. Rolling from September 30 to October 31, a trailing 12-month P&L and a general ledger both come back for October 2026 only. As-of reports are pulled as of the new date either way.
New months only keeps general ledger pulls small when you're appending to a file you already have. If you're not appending month by month, use full periods.
Roll forward a request
- Open the request. It must be Active.
- Click Roll forward.
- Set New period end. It defaults to one month after the current period end. It must be later than the current one, and not in the future.
- Under What to pull, choose Full periods or New months only.
- Click Pull now (standing approval) or Ask the owner (approve each time).
Each roll forward is a new round on the request, shown as its own card: "Roll forward to Oct 31, 2026", with "(new months only)" if you chose that. Earlier rounds and their files stay where they are.
The request's period end moves when the round is approved. If the owner declines, it stays where it was.
What the owner sees
Without standing approval, the owner gets an email headed "<Your organization> is asking for updated reports from <Company>" with the exact list of reports and dates for this round. The approval page says: "They're bringing their numbers up to date using the reports you already approved. Only these periods will be pulled."
Doing it every month
FinShare doesn't roll forward on a schedule. A common pattern:
- Create the request with the Monthly financials package (or your own template) and ask for standing approval with a long window.
- Each month after the close, open the request and roll forward to the new month end.
Over the API, the same thing is one call. See Creating requests.
